The Most Expensive Diamonds In The World & What Makes Them So Precious

If you want to know about diamonds, you’ve come to the right place.

The most expensive diamond in the world is a blue diamond that was mined in India; it’s appraised at $5 million. There are other gems worth millions of dollars, too: unheated pink diamonds, yellow diamonds, and more.

We’ll tell you all about them here.

The Blue Hope Diamond is one of the most expensive diamonds in the world.

It’s actually not a true blue diamond; it’s more of a purple that has been tinted blue, but its rarity makes it one of the priciest gems in history. The gem is named after Pierre-Jacques Theophile Hope, who bought it in 1792 for the equivalent of $2.1 million today.

The Hope Diamond is now installed in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, where it resides as one of its greatest treasures. Although blue diamonds are actually pretty common now, they were once quite rare; very few deposits even contained any. That makes blue diamonds even more desirable nowadays.

This gem was discovered in the 1880s, and it’s actually a type of purple bort diamond that has been treated with radiation to make it blue.

The process used to turn the stone into its current color is extremely controversial; some purists believe that Alexandrite should not be considered a “real” diamond at all.

Despite the controversy, this gem was sold for $1.3 million in 2006.

The Pink Star Diamond is one of the most expensive diamonds ever found; it’s valued at around $80 million.

In 2013, Harry Winston bought the Pink Star and renamed it “Winston Legacy.” It was displayed in New York City and shown at a Harry Winston event in the UAE. It’s one of the most valuable pink diamonds ever made, and it has been described as being worth 1 million dollars per carat.

That means that this gem is really, really expensive–probably not even worth stealing. Discovery Channel dubbed this “The World’s Most Expensive Diamond.” It was found in the Premier Mine, one of the deepest mines in the world.

Premier is an Australian mine that’s located nearly 1200 feet underground, and it took geologists a long time to find it–it was only discovered a few years ago.

This diamond has been valued at $40 million.

The Centenary Diamond was found in the Premier Mine in Australia, and it’s valued at a cool $35 million.

It weighs slightly less than 100 carats, making it one of the biggest pink diamonds ever to be discovered.

It’s estimated that only about 2 million people will see this gem in person before it is purchased by an anonymous buyer.

Another pink diamond, this one was discovered in South Africa and has been appraised at $26 million.

It’s a hybrid of two different types of diamonds: natural and treated, meaning that it contains both “pure” diamond qualities and enhancements made to the actual stone itself.

There’s no word on who currently owns the Pink Star of South Africa, but whoever does has a lot to be happy about.

This is the most expensive diamond ring in history–it was purchased by an anonymous buyer for $25 million.

It contains 82 carats of diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue diamond. When this ring was first put up for auction, it was valued at around 2 million dollars.

Who says diamonds aren’t a girl’s best friend? This gem is obviously extremely valuable, but how much would you pay for it?

This diamond is known as the “Cullinan Diamond” or the “Star of South Africa.”

It’s the largest diamond ever found, weighing in at a whopping 3,106.75 carats. This gem is actually cut into 9 major pieces that have been polished and are displayed around the world; 112 minor stones were created from smaller parts of the original Cullinan Diamond.

This diamond was discovered in 1905 by Frederick Wells, the mine manager for the De Beers company in South Africa. It was sold to King Edward VII of England, who presented it as a gift to his wife, Queen Alexandra. The crown jewels were housed within Westminster Abbey until the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II; they are now on display at the Tower of London.

You may have heard about this diamond in The National Treasure movie franchise–it’s a pretty popular gemstone!

The Blue Hope Diamond was renamed by Henry Philip Hope.

He bought it for his wife, and then passed it down to his daughter after she died.

It contains some flaws that are not visible to the naked eye, and after it was appraised in London in 1969, some of its flaws were fixed by re-cutting some parts of the original gem. The Hope Diamond is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

If you want to see this famous diamond for yourself: yes, you can!

You may have heard about this famous diamond in cartoons or video games…but it’s real! The Blue Heart Diamond is one of the most valuable diamonds in the world, and if it was sold today, it would go for somewhere between $165 million and $195 million.

It was first owned by Henry Philip Hope, who sold it to a wealthy coalmine owner named Laurence Graff.

Graff is now the current owner of this diamond, which is bright blue with minor traces of pink coloration.

Graff loves his Blue Heart Diamond so much that he even made a time-lapse video of its creation.

The De Beers company isn’t just the leading diamond supplier in the world; they also have their very own collection of gems.

This one is named after their company, and it was last sold at auction for about $9 million–it’s estimated to be worth somewhere around $16 million. The De Beers diamond is a fancy vivid blue color, and if it was ever sold at auction, it would probably go for more than $20 million.

This diamond is special because of its distinctive “star” shape–it’s the most valuable star-cut diamond in the world. It was originally owned by the Duke of Brunswick, who had it cut in the 1800s.

This diamond weighs 102 carats, and its estimated value is somewhere around $30 million. The most popular “fancy” shape for diamonds to take is a round brilliant cut.  People are always looking for diamonds with different shapes, but most of them are flat on the bottom.  A-Pink is the first diamond that has a faceted “step cut” design at its base.

It was discovered in 2007 by Petra Diamonds and De Beers Group in Cullinan, South Africa. It weighs 73 carats and it’s valued at $30.5 million.

The most famous Yellow Diamond in the world may help celebrate a very special anniversary for Kate Middleton and Prince William… But it’s not the real one!

This diamond was made in 2012 by London jeweler Robert Procop, who crafted it just for news reports, interviews, and media releases. This diamond replica is pretty much the same weight and size as the original stone, but it’s worth less than a million dollars.

The real “Hope Diamond” was made in 1839 and cut to its current shape by London jeweler Henry Philip Hope–and it has been passed down through his family ever since. If you want to see this famous diamond for yourself: yes, you can!  It is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in my hometown of Washington, D.C.

The most popular cut for diamonds to take is a round brilliant cut, but other cuts produce different results…and very few people know about them!

The cushion cut is the second-most-popular cut for diamonds to take, and people who know about this cut say that it’s very beautiful.  A diamond’s “depth” or “table” range refers to the depth of its facets–and the deepest part of a cushion diamond will be deeper than any other kind of diamond. This diamond’s estimated value is somewhere around $34 million!

The most popular cut for diamonds to take is a round brilliant cut, but other cuts produce different results…and very few people know about them! If a diamond has an oval shape, this means that it has been cut with a “cushion” or “pear-shaped” cut–but if you are looking at oval diamond cuts, you should also know about the “emerald” cut.

The most famous emerald-cut diamond to ever exist is a huge 105.6 carat stone called the “Cullinan Diamond.”

It was discovered in 1905 in South Africa and was originally given to King Edward VII as a gift.  It has since been recut into several other diamonds, and today the American people own one of them: it’s currently on display at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum!

This is a fancy vivid blue diamond that weighs 45 carats–and it was discovered in the Argyle mine of Western Australia in 1979.  If this diamond was ever sold at auction, it would probably go for over $40 million! This diamond has a lot of history–and if you look closely, you can see that it has some blue accents on its surface.

Apparently, the Kaapvaal craton is filled with these blue diamonds, and scientists have recently discovered that they are even more valuable than they originally thought!  This diamond’s estimated value is somewhere around $40 million dollars.

The most famous fancy red diamond in the world is located in the historic French Crown jewels…and it was stolen a couple of years ago!

In case you haven’t heard, this really happened: in August of 2008, thieves were able to break into the Tower of London, one of England’s most recognizable landmarks.  They stole a total of three crowns, several pieces of jewelry, and the “Red Cross of St. George”–the most famous red diamond in the world!

The most popular cut for diamonds to take is a round brilliant cut, but other cuts produce different results…and very few people know about them!  A great example of this is the “emerald cut”: if a diamond has an oval shape, or is more emerald-shaped, then it’s been cut with an “emerald” cut–and it’s not uncommon for small diamonds to be cut this way.

Emerald cabs are very valuable: in fact, they’re so rare that they’re usually made out of other kinds of cuts, like the square or emerald-cut.

This diamond’s estimated value is somewhere around $40 million. The Kaapvaal craton is one of the most ancient parts of Earth’s continental crust.

It consists mainly of 3,800 Mya old rocks that contain many natural resources that are still being exploited. This region is also very rich in gemstones, with all the possible types and colors.

If you’re in the market for a diamond but don’t know what to look for, this should help.

Whether you want something small and simple or large and fancy, many different cuts produce very different results–and some of them only a few people even know about!
